Okonomiyaki-style Pizza
Okonomiyaki-style
pizza is a creative fusion dish that blends the savory, umami-packed Flavors of
Japan’s beloved street food okonomiyaki with the format of Western
pizza. Okonomiyaki, which means "grilled as you like it," is a
Japanese savory pancake made with flour, shredded cabbage, eggs, and various
toppings like pork belly, seafood, or cheese. By adapting it to a pizza-style
base, this version keeps the spirit of flexibility and customization, layering
classic okonomiyaki ingredients onto a crisp crust. The result is a delightful
combination of textures and Flavors—crispy, chewy, creamy, and sweet-savory—all
in one bite.
This pizza often swaps tomato sauce for Japanese mayo and okonomiyaki sauce (a tangy-sweet condiment similar to Worcestershire), and it is typically topped with ingredients like cabbage, scallions, cheese, and sliced meats. After baking, it’s finished with drizzles of mayo, okonomiyaki sauce, bonito flakes (dried fish flakes), and sometimes aonori (seaweed powder), staying true to the visual and flavor signatures of traditional okonomiyaki. It's a fun, inventive dish perfect for fans of Japanese Flavors and a great way to bring the street food experience into the home kitchen.
